Long biography
Liam McGlashon is a Hamilton-born fiddler and multi-instrumentalist whose musical roots reach back to Prince Edward Island. He first picked up the fiddle at six while living on the Island and began performing publicly at seven. Early appearances at retirement homes and community gatherings soon grew into performances at ceilidhs, festivals and conventions across the East Coast.
After returning to Hamilton, Liam continued developing a style grounded in traditional East Coast fiddle music, while exploring Celtic, folk, country and rock. Along the way, he expanded his playing to include guitar, mandolin, banjo, tin whistle and bagpipes. His performance history includes sharing stages with Ashley MacIsaac, John McDermott, Pierre Schryer and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, with appearances ranging from intimate private events to festivals and major sporting venues.
In 2011, Liam founded the group that would become Ferguson Young. Bringing together traditional fiddle tunes, familiar songs and the social spirit of an East Coast kitchen party, the band became an ongoing part of his musical life in Hamilton. His work with Ferguson Young complements his solo performances and collaborations with other musicians.
Liam’s background also includes competitive piping and drumming. He performed with the Hamilton Police Pipe Band before joining the Peel Regional Police Pipe Band, travelling to Scotland for the World Pipe Band Championships in 2016. He later spent a season with the 78th Fraser Highlanders.
A 2020 graduate of Mohawk College’s Applied Music program, with violin as his principal instrument, Liam combines formal musical training with more than two decades of practical playing experience. Whether performing solo or with a band, his music remains rooted in the fiddle traditions that first drew him to the stage.
